The qualification is aimed at learners who want to progress to employment in the esports industry, possibly via an apprenticeship, or who may aspire to enter higher education.

YOUR QUALIFICATION

The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders. This ensures that the content is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice to enable learners to enter employment.

Higher education institutions have been consulted to ensure that the qualification allows appropriate progression for those aspiring to higher-level study.

This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement that enables learners to learn underpinning knowledge, develop technical and transferable skills, and gain experience in a variety of different sections of the esports industry.

Learners taking this qualification will study five mandatory units:

INTRODUCTION TO ESPORTS

ESPORTS SKILLS, STRATEGIES & ANALYSIS

ENTERPRISE & ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN THE ESPORTS INDUSTRY

HEALTH, WELLBEING & FITNESS FOR ESPORTS PLAYERS

ESPORTS EVENTS

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills across the different unit areas, supported by underpinning knowledge, and provides the opportunity for learners to relate these to the esports industry.

Learners will also be able to choose four optional units up to a total of 240 GLH. The optional units can focus on an area in which the learner wants to specialise, such as sport (e.g. covering coaching, nutrition and psychology), or they can extend the breadth of knowledge and skills across a range of areas within esports.

YOUR PROGRESSION

The primary focus of the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Esports is on progressing to employment across a range of roles within esports.

Jobs that are available in these areas include:

ESPORTS PLAYER

TEAM COACH

EVENTS ORGANISER

SHOUTCASTER & PRESENTER

VIDEO PRODUCTION EDITOR

DATA ANALYST

When taken as the first year of a two-year, full-time study programme, with the second year top-up to a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma, learners can progress to higher-education degree programmes such as a BA (Hons) in Events Management, a BA (Hons) in Media or a BA (Hons) in Esports, as well as accessing Higher Nationals directly from the qualification. Learners should check entry requirements for degree and HND programmes with providers.

HIGHER EDUCATION

All BTEC Nationals provide transferable knowledge and skills that prepare learners for progression to Higher Education.

The transferable skills that universities value include the ability to learn independently, research actively and methodically, make appropriate presentations, use digital systems and technology and to be an active group member.

BTEC learners can also benefit from opportunities for in-depth holistic study where they are able to make connections between different areas of learning. BTEC Nationals provide a vocational context in which learners can develop the skills required for particular degree courses, including teamwork, project work, presentation and analytical skills.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

As an SCL Enigmaz learner, you will take part in coaching sessions and competitions that require certain types of hardware.

Choosing the right hardware can be complicated, so we have broken down the most important factors to look out for as you’re preparing to join us.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

A laptop would be considered a basic entry point for the programme, but we would suggest a PC over a console for the following reasons:

Almost every game played competitively is played on a PC due to better performance

The PC can double up as a workstation for education projects, consoles can’t

A higher-end PC will last upwards of 8 years before needing upgrades

Laptops will run roughly 20-30% slower than a PC and will cost more as a result

Laptops are limited when it comes to upgrades in the future

Computers are typically made up of the following main components that affect performance:

Motherboard

The motherboard is the main board that is screwed into the computer case directly. Its function is to connect all of the components so that they may communicate and work together.

Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM is a form of data storage that allows for faster read and write operations. RAM is also volatile, which means that if the power goes out, it loses all of the data it has stored.

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The CPU can be regarded as a computer’s brain. On a computational level, it processes all of the data. It reads data from the RAM and processes it in order for the computer to do the tasks it is programmed to do.

The price of a PC build can also be increased by the CPU, but this mostly relies on your gaming needs. You could save in the CPU area as older generation chips are still quite good for gaming, giving yourself more to put towards the graphics card.

Graphics Card (GPU)

GPU is a specialised processor that is created to accelerate graphics processing. It can render many pieces of data making them ideal for machine learning, video editing, and gaming.

The graphics card is the most expensive part of your PC and will often take up about 50% of your budget if you are searching for a mid-tier system or higher.
